Scarf can also be made wider or narrower by increasing or decreasing in multiples of 5 sts.
Cast on desired number of sts, according to desired width and yarn size.
Knit one row.
Knit the next row and at the same time, increase 9 sts even across the row for a total of:
Fine yarn, 73 sts Medium yarn, 63 sts Heavy yarn, 53 sts
Work in pattern for 48 inches or more.
Pattern Row A: Slip one (as if to purl, yarn in front), K2, *K2, P3*, repeat * to * until 5 sts remain. End K5
Pattern Row B: Slip on (as if to purl, yarn in front), K2, *P2, K1, P1, K1,*, repeat * to * until 5 sts remain. End P2, K3.
Repeat these two rows, working 48", more or less. Hint: Keep a safety pin in the Row A side, so you'll know where you're at.
When scarf is desired length, ending with row A, knit one row and at the same time, decrease 9 sts evenly across the row.
Knit one row.
Cast off loosely across the row. Hint: A nice finish is to knit 2 sts together in the first two and last two sts of the cast off row.
Fringe is optional.
